As the school year comes to a close, we wanted to share with you the successes and developments at Donnington Wood Junior School, as highlighted in our July 2024 Summary Report. The progress we have made aligns closely with our strategic goals, and we are pleased to demonstrate how these achievements contribute to providing a high-quality education for all our pupils.
Celebrating Our Successes

1. Quality of Education
One of our key strategic goals is to ensure that every child receives a high-quality education. Over the past year, we have made significant strides in improving the delivery of the curriculum:
– Improved Curriculum Planning
Leaders have implemented a full review of lesson sequences across subjects. As a result, pupils are demonstrating better understanding and retention of knowledge, which is evident in their books and during class discussions.
– ‘Forever Facts’ & Retrieval Practice: The introduction of these learning techniques has made a positive impact on pupils’ ability to retain and recall knowledge, setting a strong foundation for future learning.
– Increased Staff Confidence: Teachers have reported greater confidence in their subject knowledge, particularly in embedding retrieval practice and metacognitive strategies. This has led to more effective teaching and learning across the school.
– Handwriting and Grammar Improvements: The focused teaching of handwriting and grammar has resulted in visible improvements across the school, enhancing pupils’ writing skills.
2. Leadership and Management
The leadership team, alongside our subject leaders, has worked tirelessly to ensure continuous improvement:
– Monitoring and Teacher Development:
A structured monitoring cycle has allowed leaders to provide targeted coaching, resulting in teachers gaining independence and stronger subject knowledge.
– Support for Vulnerable Pupils: We continue to be a ‘safe haven’ for pupils facing challenges, as highlighted in our recent SIAMS inspection. Our pastoral support remains exemplary, ensuring that all pupils are supported in their learning journeys.

3. Behaviour and Attitudes
We are proud of the positive behaviour and attitudes demonstrated by our pupils:
– Empathy and Emotional Regulation: Pupils are not only managing their own emotions but are also supporting their peers, showing empathy and kindness. These skills are a reflection of our strong behaviour curriculum.
– Living Our Christian Values: The behaviour of our pupils continues to be excellent, reflecting the school’s Christian values of respect, empathy, and kindness. This was noted in the SIAMS report, which praised the positive impact of these values on school culture.

4. Personal Development
We have expanded opportunities for pupils to engage in extracurricular activities:
– Extracurricular Expansion: We have increased the range of clubs available, including gymnastics, football, and rugby, particularly targeting vulnerable groups. These activities provide pupils with additional opportunities for growth beyond school

Next Steps and Ongoing Commitment
As we look towards the future, we remain committed to:
– Continuous Improvement: We will strive to narrow the gap between our school’s outcomes and national standards, particularly in core subjects such as mathematics, reading, and writing. (When released (end of October) we share our pride in the improvement we have made)
– Curriculum Refinement: Our curriculum will continue to evolve, with a focus on ensuring that every pupil, regardless of their background or ability, can access and succeed in their learning.
– Community Engagement: We are dedicated to maintaining strong relationships with you, our parents and carers. Your feedback is invaluable, and we will continue to listen, engage, and work together to provide the best possible education for your children. (In September we will host open afternoons and events, and later in year different curriculum events.)
