Our School Vision

Our school is a community where each person is valued as a child of God. We are a Church of England school, inspired and guided by the life and teaching of Jesus. We work together to create a caring, friendly and safe school family, to enable the whole school community to flourish and each person reach their full God-given potential.

This document is devised to support this vision, and has the following intentions:

· Pupils are empowered to develop the hope and perseverance necessary to engage the challenges of learning in the context of school and the wider world.

· Teaching staff seek out every opportunity to ensure that all pupils flourish in P.E lessons, developing wisdom and creativity through an ambitious and broad curriculum that challenges expectations, deepens knowledge and develops skills.

· P.E lessons are inclusive, so everyone is valued and respected – and tolerance and diversity are celebrated.

Intent

At Donnington Wood Junior School, Physical Education is of paramount importance. Our aim is to instil an understanding of healthy participation and foster a lifelong appreciation for physical activity, ultimately enabling them to embrace a healthy lifestyle. To achieve this, we provide various avenues for children to enhance their motor skills, building upon fundamental movement skills and applying them across diverse sporting contexts. We emphasize the importance of comprehending different rules, strategies, and tactical awareness across various sports, drawing parallels and distinctions between them. Through Physical Education, we aim to cultivate character traits such as fairness and collaboration, aligning with fundamental British Values and our school values of hope, friendship, and perseverance. Our curriculum is designed with inclusivity at its core, ensuring every child can thrive in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities.

Implement

Our Physical Education curriculum adheres closely to the National Curriculum, offering a well-structured framework covering a range of sporting disciplines, including dance, gymnastics, orienteering, invasion games, net and wall activities, athletics, and swimming. These are taught by our dedicated class teachers. We provide children with opportunities to experience other sports through specialised coaches, with the outcome of supporting the children leading healthy, active lifestyles outside of school. These sports include, but are not limited to:

· Cricket

· Rugby – with the opportunity to attend a local rugby club, which helps remove any barriers to accessing sport.

· Squash

· Bikeability – which empowers children to use their bikes safely around the local community.

We provide a curriculum that equips children with both disciplinary and substantive knowledge to engage in physical activity effectively as they progress through our well-devised program. Clear progression of declarative and procedural knowledge is ensured across all sporting areas. Opportunities for applying transferable knowledge and skills in different contexts are embedded within the curriculum, with a focus on revisiting and building upon existing knowledge. The fundamental movement skills are consistently reinforced throughout our curriculum, with clear links established across year groups.

Impact

By the end of Key Stage 2, we expect our children to develop a passion for physical activity, demonstrating a desire to continue learning and participating in sports as they transition to secondary school. Children to actively engage in sports clubs within school or the local community. Children to exhibit confidence in trying new sporting activities and utilize transferable skills to succeed. Children to possess proficient fundamental movement skills applicable across various sporting contexts. Children to recognize positive sporting role models and understand the values contributing to their success. Children to lead healthy lifestyles, understanding the importance of physical activity. All children to be offered opportunities to participate in competitive sports. Children to embody the hidden values of sport, including fairness and collaboration, alongside fundamental British Values and school values.
